Where Wabaunsee County’s Story Lives On
Preserving and sharing the people, places, and stories that shaped Wabaunsee County, Kansas. Inspired by the past. Rooted in the Flint Hills.

Why We’re Here
The Wabaunsee County Historical Society and Museum exists to preserve and share the stories of this place, its communities, schools, landscapes, traditions, and everyday lives, so future generations can stay connected to the history that shaped them.
More than a collection of artifacts, the museum is a place to experience the spirit of Wabaunsee County and the people who built it.
Our Story
Local History Matters because it tells who we are.
In 1968, Alma native Fred Palenske of St. Joseph, Michigan, gave an endowment that helped establish the Wabaunsee County Historical Society and purchase the museum at 227 Missouri Street, along with Palenske Hall at 226 Missouri Street in Alma. The museum originally opened as the Minnie Zwanziger Memorial Museum, honoring Palenske’s sister.
What began as an act of generosity became something much bigger: a place where the history of Wabaunsee County could be preserved, shared, and carried forward.
